The concept of renown i think hasn't been exploited to its full potential. While you gain renown from killing decently-sized perties, I think you should also be able to get renown from completing certain quests.
Any major quest (such as escorting a staple petition, participating in a war of communes, defeating a tax castle, papapl/imperial castle quest etc) should also carry a small renown reward.
Similarly, participation in the tournament lists should also net you some reknown (perhaps 2 for every fight you win), and participation in the mayfield campaign (4 for every count you net)

How about an alternate to renown such as "infamy"? It could cancel out renown or counterbalance some of the effects. I guess it's somewhat implemented in negative faction standing with the enemies you attack.

While you gain renown from killing decently-sized perties, I think you should also be able to get renown from completing certain quests. It's not even close to being exploited. If you want to jot down some numbers you think appropriate, take a peek at the "mathematics" thread here, and where you think they'd fit best and by how much. (or even if you think parts or the whole system should be scrapped and redone from scratch). (Some of the mathematics has been adjusted since, but it is still roughly as I put it there). Remember renown is exceedingly easy to obtain by battle, so make those numbers big. Infamy is good - but it can be just subtractions from renown. I certainly want to throw it in to naughtiness like, say, breaking truce/peace of God and stuff like that.

I don't like this. If this were the case, renown and infamy would create an objective way of measuring honour or virtue, which is of course a complete antithesis to the theme of divided loyalties in lombardia. With Guelf/ghibelline, papal/imperial, greater/lesser and Noble/clergy/burgher/peasant divisions, who's to say that what you do is right or wrong on an objective scale?
I think renown is best kept as a rough indicator of how famous you are. As such, it's best as a reward for doing noteworthy things.
I think up some rules for renown soon.

Perhaps Ingo is right. The conflict in Lombardia is completely subjective. The factions are narrowly focused and anything that another does against them would be considered infamous. I kind of like the idea of infamy for a robber baron or highwayman but maybe that'd be another mod. The word renown does seem to have a "positive" association. Perhaps there could be another term for your famousness. Actual positive or negative would come from faction standing.
